Gould Evans Designs Garmin’s $200 Million Campus Expansion

New campus to position tech giant as a leading innovator well into the future

Kansas City, MO, August 26, 2016 – Nationally-recognized design and planning firm Gould Evans, in design-build partnership with one of the region’s largest construction managers McCownGordon Construction, has designed Garmin’s new 720,000 square-foot manufacturing and distribution center, which is the first project in the company’s $200 million expansion of its North American headquarters in Olathe, Kansas. A ground-breaking ceremony for the new building was held on August 26th, 2016.

The two-phase master plan for the campus expansion is designed to position the technology company as a leading innovator well into the future.

According to Patrick Desbois, vice president of operations for Garmin, the new manufacturing and distribution center is a vitally important piece of Garmin’s ongoing success. “To achieve our goals, Garmin needs a world-class facility to attract and retain the highest level of talent. This project is essential to Garmin’s success and it signals our commitment to our customers, associates, shareholders, and community. We are confident that the design-build team of McCownGordon and Gould Evans will deliver the highest levels of value and quality on the expansion.”

Gould Evans’ design of the new manufacturing and distribution center responds to the company’s need to transform the existing center into a modern office. The building will house a unique blend of office space and dining alongside the company’s manufacturing and distribution operations, nearly doubling current campus capabilities.

The metal and concrete panels on the exterior of the building will be textured as a subtle nod to Garmin’s vertical integration business model, blending technology and design with the manufacturing and warehouse processes.

Other design details include:

  • Exposed concrete floors complimented by pops of color, modern furniture, and areas of soft carpet underfoot

  • A large, sunlit dining area with expansive views of the campus and outdoor patio seating

  • Open-office workstations organized along a glass curtain wall, offering daylight and views of the central campus

The new center, which is estimated to take two years to complete, will be followed up with a state-of-the-art research and development facility coming in the second phase of the expansion. The full expansion is expected to near completion in late 2020.

“We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to be Garmin’s design partner, helping them transform their campus into a world-class facility over the next four years,” said Dan Zeller, Principal with Gould Evans. “The design of this expansion is focused on creating a world-class working environment existing and future Garmin associates, which is a testament to Garmin’s continuous commitment to providing a healthy workplace.”

Once finished, the new campus will provide first-class amenities like a fitness center, dining, and large gathering areas. The campus will feature inviting greenspace amenities as well, including athletic fields and a two mile outdoor walking trail to promote fitness and interaction among associates.

This expansion comes on the heels of a new addition to Garmin’s parking garage, recently completed by the McCown Gordon-Gould Evans Design Build team. The addition, which was designed to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment towards the center of the campus, and the existing garage were wrapped in a perforated metal panel to unify the two garages as one consistant design element at the corporate entrance to the campus.
